Like the Maiden family, The Round family of 3 Ball’s Hill, Dawley were to suffer more than most during the First World War. Five sons of the late Alfred Round and his wife Sarah Ann were to join up during the war and three of them never returned including Noah who was Dawley’s youngest serviceman to die during the course of the war. All the brothers had been connected with the Lawley Bank Wesleyan Sunday school before the War.

The first heart-breaking news to arrive at Balls Hill came in 1915 when news that Enoch had been killed in action during the Gallipoli campaign in the Dardanelle’s of Turkey. Enoch was serving with the Connaught Rangers when he was killed in action on the 21st August 1915. Like some many other casualties of this war his body was never identified and his name appears on the Helles Memorial to the missing Panels 181 — 183.

Extra Info:
Enoch was born on the 20th Feb 1884 and had a Non-Conformist Baptism on the 11th Mar 1884 at Ackworth.

Enoch’s widow was “ineligible for grant” from the army, but his two children Frank Enoch born 01/01/1911, and Elsie Round born 28/06/1913 did receive his army pension,

His father, Alfred’s death was from a mining accident at the Brandlee colliery owned by Days Ltd, the report;
A well had been sunk a depth of 6 yards from the working seam down to a worked-out seam for the purpose of draining the water away during the winter mouths.

Deceased was making an examination at the bottom of the well when a piece of fireclay from side above the top of the well fell and struck him between the shoulders. He died in Broseley Infirmary on October 24th. A careful examination before descending the well would probably have revealed the weak side.
